Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C minor | Part 5 The “genial and elegant” second theme appears, also with the dotted figure. There is an “old world, promenade character to this theme.” But don’t be deceived. The next section is startling: it’s a march! However, it’s soon back to the “gloom.” But before long we come to a glorious C Major passage. Alas, not for long. Where is Beethoven going? We review the various sections we’ve heard up to this point and the section ends in a very formal, courtly manner. BEETHOVEN’S UNIVERSE The Beethoven 5th movie is the first in a series of programs that will explore all nine of Beethoven’s great symphonies. In each program, Mr. Rapchak will examine each movement from each symphony and reveal the overall structure of each movement and the structure of the entire symphony. He does this through a combination of talk interspersed with excerpts he performs at the piano and music excerpts taken from a Naxos Records recording of the nine symphonies. In some cases, he talks over the music in what we call “play-by-play” sections. To accompany the audio in each program, the Virtual Concert Halls team has created a series of stunning visuals that follow the story as it unfolds. The visuals include pictures of composers Mr. Rapchak mentions in each program, the full score or piano reduction of passages he is discussing that are highlighted so listeners can follow along, images of musicians performing, wonderful landscapes to move the narrative along and, of course, images of Beethoven that are used judiciously throughout. For the Beethoven 5th movie, Lawrence begins right away with his passionate and entertaining narration. “It is terse, it is compact. Its dynamic energy is concentrated into a mere nine and a half minutes of music, the shortest opening movement of Beethoven’s nine symphonies. And it’s all the more stunning because of the bold unprecedented way in which it begins.” And from here he takes us on a journey throughout all four movements showing how they are intertwined and how Beethoven used a variety of harmonic and melodic techniques to power his visionary thinking. We also learn that Beethoven used a four- note theme in a few of his other compositions and that a piece by Cherubini that Beethoven almost certainly knew, has a passage in it that is startling similar to Beethoven’s famous opening theme in the 5th Symphony. We learn that the transition passage from the third to fourth movement had a profound influence on music and art and inspired Berlioz to write an evocative description of it. And, as noted, the entire program is accompanied by a beautiful and rich series of images that accompany the film and that enhance it in a uniquely beautiful way. And surely there are many issues and challenges which all people involve must face and resolve when participating in a competition. He started taking violin lessons at the age of 5 and a half with Olga Khroulevitch at the Levine School of Music in Washington, DC, moving later to Peter Sirotin and then to Rafail Sobolevsky and Oleg Rylatko, concertmaster of the Washington National Opera House Orchestra in Washington D.C. He studied with Naoko Tanaka at the Juilliard School, Oleg Rylatko at National Symphony Orchestra Fellowship program, and with Aaron Rosand privately. He also studied conducting with Maestro Mark McCoy and Maestro Glaser. Fedor is a devout promoter of classical music: in 2009 he became one of the founding performer-members of Arts Are For All Ages, a non-profit organization in Washington DC area, which provides classical music concerts to retirement communities. The organization’s membership consists mainly of high school young musicians, who volunteer their performances, and has grown to over 50 active performer-members and is providing about 70 concerts per year. Teaching young musicians is another of Fedor’s passions: he has taught students of different ages and levels, he also coached young violinists in preparation for youth and school orchestra auditions. Fedor loves methodical approach to teaching, and he has built a system of individual plans and written follow-up assignments which he gives to his students to help them make better use of their practicing time. Alexander has performed cutting-edge new music by composers from the United States and abroad as well as his own works at the Oregon Bach Festival and John Donald Robb Composers Symposiums, Cascadia Composers (NACUSA) and the Schultz Seminar at Stanford. Alexander has given masterclasses throughout the United States, at UFRGS Conservatory in Porto Alegre, Brazil and at DTKV and Klavierfestival-Lindlar in Germany. He has held senior management positions with numerous American radio stations, including WFMT and the WFMT Radio Network/Chicago, WBUR/Boston, WGBH/Boston, WCRB/Boston, KPFA/Berkeley, WBGO/Newark, Vermont Public Radio and Nebraska Public Radio Network.ork. He has held senior management positions with numerous American radio stations, including WFMT and the WFMT Radio Network/Chicago, WBUR/Boston, WGBH/Boston, WCRB/Boston, KPFA/Berkeley, WBGO/Newark, Vermont Public Radio and Nebraska Public Radio Network.ork. Robinson served as general manager of the statewide Nebraska Public Radio Network (1990-2000) and WFMT and the WFMT Radio Network from 2000 until October 2016. A 50-year radio veteran, he has produced programs ranging from classical music documentaries to public affairs programs and has directed over 100 on-air pledge drives. In 1984, he co-founded AIR, the Association of Independents in Radio, a service organization to assist independent radio producers in the United States. Robinson wrote AIR’s first two successful grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
