Beethoven Symphony No. 8 Part 8 Continuing with our series of programs dedicated to Beethoven's Nine Symphonies. Today, Anna Ouspenskaya and Chris Ka Long Au explore Symphony No. 8. After watching part of the film, stay tuned for an engaging discussion. Beethoven’s Eighth is compact, direct, and structurally tight. It uses clear motivic cells, abrupt dynamic shifts, and concise thematic development. The work often reads as a study in controlled wit and mechanical precision. Beethoven fondly referred to it as "my little Symphony in F", distinguishing it from his Sixth Symphony, a longer work also in F. The Eighth Symphony is generally light-hearted, though not lightweight, and in many places loud, with many accented notes. Various passages in the symphony are heard by some listeners to be musical jokes. More about Architects of Music: https://www.youtube.com/@thearchitectsofmusic BEETHOVEN’S UNIVERSE In this ongoing series, Lawrence Rapchak examines each movement of Beethoven’s symphonies, revealing their inner structures and illuminating the architecture of each complete work. No other program about Beethoven’s symphonies has been created in this fashion, and it is our hope to present all nine of these masterpieces in the coming months. To accompany the audio in each episode, the Virtual Concert Halls team has created a visually engaging experience. The visuals include composer portraits, full scores and piano reductions with highlighted passages, performance photos, landscapes to support the narrative, and curated images of Beethoven himself. Beethoven Symphony No. 8 Part 7 Continuing with our series of programs dedicated to Beethoven's Nine Symphonies. • Swift | Sound Espressivo

Is your art and music swift enough? Find out here! Sound Espressivo is the first online LIVE streaming Competition for classical musicians of all ages. Contestants and judges focus on unique artistry of every performer, awarding prizes offered by music management companies. SWIFT Show off incredible speeds and blow us away with your crisp playing! In-Depth Playing music is just as athletic as any sport, requiring a large amount of precision and training to perfect the art. Some musicians find excitement in pushing the bounds of fast playing to levels beyond our imagination and comprehension, showing the world what humans are capable of. Swift performers work to push the metronome to its breaking point and impress in a clear cut way. General Criteria (평가기준) Extreme Tempo - speed of switching between notes and coordinating faster is one of the two key components to impressing the club of swift players. Extreme Accuracy - accuracy of landing every note and change is the other key component to flashy playing. Marvelous Presentation - playing fast is one thing, but looking as if you didn't break a sweat doing it and maybe had time to wink at the crowd can truly bring the heat to the audience. Consistency - staying flashy is great an all, but doing it for the entire duration of a piece and testing on bigger and harder works without faltering is showing true mastery.

How good is your program? Find out here! Sound Espressivo is the first online LIVE streaming Competition for classical musicians of all ages. Contestants and judges focus on unique artistry of every performer, awarding prizes offered by music management companies. program Prepare a collection of music with a message and express yourself through dedicating to a theme! In-Depth Artists can prepare large programs of music surrounding some connection between them, be it a composer or a collection of that composer's works, or a message and style discovered by the artist. It is invaluable to be able to prepare large collections of music and study a large grasp of the repertoire that exists and combine it into something massive. This sort of performance can be grandeur and especially moving, as well as revealing connections for audiences that the most dedicated artists believe in and want to express. General Criteria (평가기준) Length and/or Variety - it is basic that a prepared program has either large variety or is dedicated to a consistent style and theme for large amounts of time. Pondering over something grand takes a lot of music. Connection - knowing a lot of repertoire is not enough without a meaning to tie it together, and such meaning needs to be heard beyond program notes and through playing and organized planning of order and presentation. Immersion - the idea and goal of the program must captivate in a unique way that keeps the audience drawn in exploring your masterful concert as it goes on and keeping them engaged with you on what matters. Story - it is extremely exciting to have a collection of music tell some sort of story and express something. This helps a program from becoming static and difficult to digest and is key to winning the audience over onto your journey of exploration.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Heritage and Harmony: Silver Linings, an Album Spotlighting Music by Under- Represented Composers, Will Be Released on May 1st New EP Featuring AAPI/BIPOC Artists Aims to Promote Understanding and Tolerance and Combat Racism New York, NY—April 26, 2021 On May 1st, pianist and music producer Donna Weng Friedman will be releasing the EP album Heritage and Harmony: Silver Linings. The album, which will be available on Spotify, Amazon, Tidal and other online outlets, is intended as a response to the wave of violence against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) individuals, and aims to promote understanding and tolerance among people of all backgrounds. It features Ms. Weng Friedman and soprano Indira Mahajan performing music by composers Margaret Bonds, Beata Moon, Florence B. Price, and Chinary Ung. The performers and composers are all members of the AAPI and/or BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) communities. https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/donnawengfriedman/heritage-and-harmony-silver-linings The album’s release date is timed to coincide with the start of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. “I am an Asian American concert pianist, and like so many of us, my heart aches from the ongoing hate crimes against our AAPI community,” says Ms. Weng Friedman. “Each piece on this EP album helped get me through the pandemic year, which started with my being assaulted on the street of New York City for being Asian, and ended with my entire family getting sick with COVID-19.” All proceeds from the album will be donated to the Korean American Community Foundation (KACF) an organization that supports the AAPI community through philanthropy and education. “The KAFC is committed to fighting for diversity, equity and inclusion, and will not tolerate racism on any level,” notes Ms. Weng Friedman. “I learned an incredible amount from their virtual information sessions, talks and panels over the last year.” She adds, “My hope is that this album will resonate with people of all ethnicities who are looking for a way to help support our AAPI community. By listening to each track on Heritage and Harmony: Silver Linings, they can enjoy the glorious music of incredible but under-represented BIPOC composers and musicians while also making a small but valuable contribution to the AAPI community.” For more information, contact: Donna Weng Friedman donnawengfriedman@gmail.com 동영상 보기 동영상 보기 48:58 Mio Imai, violin - Sound Espressivo Laureates' Recital Accompanied by Mark Livshits, piano 3:16 Lalo - Symphonie Espagnole (I. The project commissions a diverse group of composers from countries of conflict and unrest around the world, with all new works unified by a single “Peace motif” from Beethoven, where he added the inscription “A Call for Inward and Outward Peace” above the notes. Each new composition is connected to one of Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas. "32 Bright Clouds" aims to harness music’s great power for unity and peace. This campaign is now closed CHICAGO’S UKRAINIAN INSTITUTE FOR MODERN ART PARTNERS WITH VIRTUAL CONCERT HALLS TO HOST A LIVE GLOBAL INTERNET BROADCAST TO BENEFIT UNICEF USA All Funds Raised will Support Emergency and Humanitarian Aid for Ukrainian Families and Children Suffering from the Devastation of War Wednesday, April 13, 2022 6:00am-11:59pm EST/EDT Chicago -- On April 13, 2022, the Ukrainian Institute for Modern Art (UIMA) is partnering with Virtual Concert Halls (VCHS) , a Virginia-based ITV producer, to host a global online fundraising effort to benefit UNICEF USA, who are committed to providing emergency aid to families and children in Ukraine. The event will stream to multiple social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Twitch and LinkedIn. Virtual Concert Halls will take the 18-hour live Internet Web stream from 5:00 a.m. to 11 p.m. CT from the Institute’s gallery and distribute it live to major social media platforms. Virtual Concert Halls streams live events from all over the world and are experts at streaming simultaneously on multiple social media platforms. Throughout the broadcast, news anchors will interview a wide variety of people who are close to the situation in Ukraine including historians, scholars, lawmakers, young Ukrainian refugees who recently arrived in Chicago, among others. UNICEF has been in Ukraine for 25 years—and it is on the ground now, delivering safe water, health and hygiene supplies, blankets, warm clothes and psycho-social care to children and their families. Security is especially crucial during this time when many children and youth are separated from their families which leaves them in indescribably vulnerable. Donations are accepted any time before, during, and after the live stream. According to a recent statement by UNICEF USA, two million children have now been forced to flee Ukraine, as the war rages on. “The situation inside Ukraine is spiraling,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “As the number of children fleeing their homes continues to climb, we must remember that every single one of them needs protection, education, safety and support.” In a joint statement, Motria Melnyk, President of the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art and Marta Farion, Vice President said, "The war in Ukraine is breaking all of our hearts and so the opportunity to make our facility the staging area for this amazing fundraising effort was enthusiastically welcomed by our board and staff." In addition to her work at the Ukrainian Institute, Farion is also the president of the Kyiv-Mohyla Foundation of America. Virtual Concert Halls co-founder, Anna Ouspenskaya, said, “We are deeply touched and honored to be included in this project. People on our team come from different continents and backgrounds, but many of us share one thing in common: we carry scars and pains of being raised in the countries of the former Soviet bloc, or have relatives who endured the horrors of that terrible regime. Working on this project is the least we can do for Ukrainians who are enduring unimaginable pain. My colleagues at VCHS and I myself are putting our whole hearts into this effort.” HELPING UNICEF IN UKRAINE Internet Broadcast is spearheaded by veteran public radio broadcaster, Steve Robinson, President of New Media Productions. In 2003 for the victims of the tsunami and again in 2010 for victims of the earthquake in Haiti, Steve organized all-day fundraisers in involving virtually all Chicago television and radio stations that each raised $3 million in humanitarian assistance. “I hope this 18-hour continuous stream raises millions of dollars for UNICEF in this emergency,” Robinson said. ABOUT UNICEF: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) works in more than 190 countries and territories to pursue a more equitable world for every child. UNICEF has helped save more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization, by providing health care and immunizations, safe water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more. UNICEF USA advances the global mission of UNICEF by rallying the American public to support the world’s most vulnerable children. Together, we are working toward a world that upholds the rights of all children and helps every child thrive. For more information, visit www.unicefusa.org. • Lyrical | Sound Espressivo

Are you a lyricist? Find out here! Sound Espressivo is the first online LIVE streaming Competition for classical musicians of all ages. Contestants and judges focus on unique artistry of every performer, awarding prizes offered by music management companies. lyrical Allure with your expression and emotional delivery of the music! In-Depth The voice is known to be the most naturally lyrical instrument due to how much we can feel and hear the connection in the lines of music and the changes in music and sound being so smooth and emotional. This is the root of the goal when trying to deliver a very lyrical performance, as well as having emphasis on delivering power of emotion in combination with a sensation of compassion and connection of what we're hearing to what we're feeling in a very personal way. General Criteria (평가기준) Great Voice Line Control - melody lines and other voices in the music should always be going somewhere and longing to connect and express something, luring the listener to follow its path. Balance - with music having different moments or even voice lines, having a well thought out approach for balancing these in relation to each other and different sections is invaluable Tone and Color - choice of tone type and colors can enhance and enrich the expression of the music. Captivating Presence - moving in smooth and elegant ways can compliment the music's smoothness and blissful expression and therefore enhance the captivating elements of being lyrical.
